Job description

THE ROLE

Working closely with the Director, Business Intelligence (BI), the Data Modeller is
responsible for ensuring that data is structured, transformed, and optimised for reporting
and analytical purposes. By designing robust and efficient data models, they enable
business intelligence teams to generate meaningful insights and decision-making reports.
They work closely with business stakeholders and technical teams to ensure that the data
aligns with business needs, is of high quality, and can be accessed efficiently for reporting
purposes.

We are looking for someone to join the State Gov Department team and utilise their high-level skills in data
modelling experience. The collaborative team values continuous development, creative
thinking, and well-developed communication skills. In this role, you will collaborate with
fellow team members and stakeholders at varying levels across the department to deliver
data assets that support the strategic direction of the Department.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provision of technical subject matter expertise to support the design and implementation of a modern data platform through effective collaboration with Data & Analytics and broader Strategic Delivery stakeholders.
  • Create logical and physical data models that support the creation of business reports and dashboards. This includes working with structured and unstructured data sources.
  • Structure data in a way that is optimised for reporting, which may involve either normalising data for relational models or denormalising it for data warehouses or reporting purposes (e.g., star schema or snowflake schema).
  • Define and implement data transformation logic required for preparing raw data into usable forms for reporting (e.g., aggregations, calculations, time-series formatting).

KEY SKILLS

  • Demonstrated expertise in creating data models (logical, physical) for reporting purposes. Familiarity with database design principles such as normalisation, denormalisation, star and snowflake schema (Kimball modelling), entity relationship modelling, and reference data management.
  • Experience in designing and implementing large scale data loading, manipulation, processing, analysis and exploration data solutions (preferably with strong SQL skills in a Microsoft Data and Analytics environment).
  • Demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills to recommend innovative approaches to data management, ensuring accurate and timely outputs.
  • Demonstrated understanding of master data management principles and processes.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to build and sustain positive relationships and consult, negotiate, liaise and influence others to achieve mutually beneficial solutions and provide advice and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders
