Our QLD Government client is currently seeking a High Performance Computing (HPC) Specialist, needed for project support, training, and operational tasks with Linux & Windows clusters in scientific computing.
THE ROLE
The Department is seeking to engage a High Performance Computing (HPC) Specialist to assist with projects, training
and operational support. The department currently maintain Linux and Microsoft Windows-based high performance
computing clusters, mass data storage systems, and ancillary infrastructure to support a diverse user base focused on scientific computing. Typical workloads range from satellite image processing to climate science, with machine learning
and other innovative techniques actively explored. The HPC Specialist will report to the HPC Team
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Offering expert guidance to scientific staff on software management and dependencies and developing or improving their workflows and use of the HPC systems
- Providing training to scientific personnel to enhance their understanding of HPC capabilities
- Creation of and updates to technical documentation to support system understanding and usage.
- Developing and maintaining high performance computing (HPC) systems and optimising batch processing to support scientific researchers in their use of extensive datasets
- Implementation of and upgrades to infrastructure components, applying best practices for deployment
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- A minimum of five years managing and supporting Linux-based cluster environments
- Proficiency with batch management software and supporting parallel applications
- An understanding of parallel file systems used in HPC, expertise in mass storage systems, and experience with hierarchical storage management using tape libraries, such as HPE Data Management Framework (DMF)
- Demonstrated capability in overseeing HPC software, aiding staff in compiling and troubleshooting scientific programs
- Proficiency in several scripting and programming languages, notably bash, Perl, Python, and R
DESIREABLE
- Familiarity with containerisation and virtualisation technologies applicable in HPC contexts, such as Apptainer/Singularity
- Experience utilising continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) tools, including GitHub Actions, GitLab Runner, or Jenkins
- Acquaintance with delivering Jupyter notebooks through platforms like JupyterHub.
- Knowledge of managing Microsoft Windows-based HPC Clusters using tools like HPC Pack.
- Working experience with cloud services and orchestration platforms, such as AWS, Azure, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
- Experience with Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) v2 and WSLg.
